Noah Schnapp says he wouldn’t have come out as gay without ‘Stranger Things’

“If I hadn’t played this character, I’d probably still be in the closet,” the 18-year-old actor said.

The actor Noah Schnapp, 18, has been a familiar face since he was a child. The artist, who plays Will Byers in Stranger things on Netflix since she was 10, she recently went through a new process in the public eye: assuming her sexuality.

Earlier this year, Noah came out as gay in a video he posted with more than 31 million TikTok followers. According to the actor, this revelation was recorded on his cell phone for months and his closest friends questioned him when he reported it. “I’m not ready yet,” he replied.

On January 5 of this year, the actor plucked up courage. “I was crying. I was like, ‘I did it. I’m done. I don’t have to worry,'” the actor told the magazine. Variety. According to Schnapp, the decision was the result of a process that began with his character.

Since the show debuted in 2016, the actor has been pressured with questions about Will’s sexuality. In 2022, when Stranger things became one of the greatest Netflix shows of all time with the fourth season, the storyline also started focusing on the character’s relationships and interests. “Once I fully accepted that Will was gay, it was just exponential speed to accept the same for myself,” says Schnapp.

With that, the actor confirmed the information about his character to the press and, according to him, that made all the difference: in the comments, fans celebrated that Will Byers was indeed gay.

“I was like, if he has all this support, then why should I care about anything?”

For Noah, Will was also instrumental in this regard. “I’d be in a whole different place if I didn’t have Will to play and hug and help me accept myself. I think if I’ve never played this character I’d probably still be in the closet.”
