There are two serious problems behind Jojo’s charity towards humble workers

The episode generates understandable criticism of the influencer and raises a necessary reflection on overexposure

“True charity is impalpable like light and invisible like perfume: it gives heat, it gives perfume, but it cannot be touched or seen”.

The phrase of the writer and immortal ABL Coelho Neto serves as a lesson to many famous people who are used to giving with one hand while filming the scene of a good deed with the other.

Let’s look at the recent case of Jojo Todynho. The influencer is criticized on social media for posting an image of service providers at her home with mini panettone and R$100 notes presented by her.

Most saw Jojo as a stingy boss with his employees, as he displays a luxurious life. Here is the first controversy: the public was (badly) accustomed to witnessing the ostentation of celebrities who pass themselves off as millionaires.

With expectations skyrocketing, it is really difficult to accept a merely symbolic gesture through a small panettone and an amount considered small compared to the expense exhibited by these media personalities. Always expect more.

There is a distortion. Basic solidarity, done more for the value of the heart, is of no use: the Internet court demands grandiose attitudes, such as the showy money “cakes” distributed by Deolane Bezerra to his employees. One of them even received R$50,000.

We are losing sight of the greatness of simple and discreet gestures. Sad times.

The other tricky issue in Jojo’s action (as well as that of Deolane and many others) is revealing what may remain confidential. He conveys the impression that there is no generosity without marketing for self-promotion.

Many celebrities’ lack of control is evident: they cannot do anything – from the trivial to the relevant – without posting to millions of followers and, as a result, generating online press releases. Then they still dare to complain about the violation of privacy.

Those who reveal everything on social media give others the right to express their opinion. And, as in this case starring Jojo, what could be positive takes on a pejorative tone. Better to keep certain things away from your smartphone camera.

(The blog chose to apply an effect on the faces of the influencer’s employees to preserve their identity and image. While the use of the photo has journalistic intent, exposing them would be inconsistent given the analysis presented in the text.)
