Three uncomfortable truths for those who donate their brains to influencers

Three uncomfortable truths for those who donate their brains to influencers

“Nothing is more harmful to one’s own thinking than the very strong influence of the thoughts of others,” said the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer

On a wall next to the main entrance of the Marechal Deodoro metro station in the central Sao Paulo region are posters with a provocative message.

“In life, who influences you?”

Gone are the days when family, and especially parents, were the main source of influence for most people. School has also lost space, as have church and friends.

Today, inspiration, induction and manipulation are focused on cell phones. Famous influencers wield power over their followers to the point of being copied in their thinking and behavior, and continue to make millions by selling products that no one needs.

The question about the posters raises three truths about these Internet celebrities and their private universe.

The follower is nothing more than a tool to enrich the influencer – Engagement with likes, comments and shares generates more relevance and, consequently, adds value to the profile owner. In practice, anonymous people work for free so that a small group can have a luxurious life, ostentatious to make followers dream that one day they too will be able to achieve all this.

The influencer only shows what he wants to build a convenient public image for himself – Crowds of those who believe they really know the great celebrities of the web. They only record and release what will produce positive repercussions, be they funny, heartwarming or controversial. Show your best version. Who they really are is beyond the reach of the curious eyes of their followers.

Empty content produces empty followers – everyone needs to alienate themselves from time to time. You can’t always take life (and yourself) seriously. But social networks and influencers specialize in treating the public as if they were livestock vulnerable to orders. Most of the videos present nothing of note, just banalities. No topic is explored in depth. The follower spends precious hours of the day and night consuming scenes useless to his development. Worse still: he becomes addicted to this superficial worldview, this superficial way of life.

It is impossible not to conclude that the devoted follower of these “digital influencers” gives up their life to live the reality forged by fragile idols. What’s in it for you? In fact, the question that everyone must ask is different: how much is lost in this way?
