The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the four awards for the upcoming Oscars. Actor Michael J. Fox, the landmark “Back to the Future” franchise, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his charitable work, while French-speaking director Euzhan Palcy, American singer-songwriter Diane Warren and Australian director Peter Weir will be awarded with the Honorary Oscar for the completion of their career.
Since revealing his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Michael J. Fox has been dedicated to supporting initiatives to find a cure or improve the living conditions of patients with the disease, while also creating his own charity. This work is at the heart of the Academy’s recognition of him.
Considered a revolutionary filmmaker, Euzhan Palcy, born in Martinique, in the Caribbean, was the first black director to be awarded at the Venice Film Festival and at the César (French Oscar), a feat accomplished with the extraordinary “Rue Cases Nègres” in 1983 .
Diane Warren is a veteran singer-songwriter, with no fewer than 12 Oscar nominations, but has never won any awards. He has composed songs such as “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, recorded by Aerosmith for the soundtrack of “Armageddon” (1998), “Til It Happens to You”, sung by Lady Gaga in the soundtrack of the documentary “The Hunting Ground “(2015) and” Stand Up for Something “, played by rapper Common in” Marshall: Equality and Justice “(2017).
To top it off, Peter Weir is an established director with six Oscar nominations. His filmography includes modern classics such as “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “The Mosquito Coast” (1986), which became an Apple TV + series, and “The Truman Show” (1998), which was awarded at Cannes this year. But after his latest Oscar nomination for “Master of the Seas: The Far Side of the World” (2003), he has only made one more feature: “Freeway” (2010). He hasn’t filmed in 12 years.
“The Academy Board is honored to recognize four individuals who have made invaluable contributions to film and the world at large. Michael J. Fox’s relentless advocacy of Parkinson’s research, coupled with his boundless optimism, exemplifies the impact one person can make to change the future of millions of people. Euzhan Palcy is a pioneering director whose groundbreaking significance in international cinema is cemented in the history of cinema. Diane Warren’s music and lyrics amplified the emotional impact of countless films and inspired generations of musical artists. Peter Weir is a director of consummate skill and talent whose work reminds us of the power of films to reveal the full range of human experience, “said Academy President David Rubin in an official statement.
The honorees will receive their awards during the 13th Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ceremony that often brings together insiders in Los Angeles just before the Oscars. This year will be much earlier: November 19th.
In addition to this event, the four winners will also attend the Oscars on March 12 to receive acclaim from the entire film community.
