The Brazilian artists are launching an urgent appeal on social media against a public hearing by the Ministry of Health, scheduled for Tuesday morning (28/6) to discuss an “abortion manual”.
A preliminary version of that document, released on the 7th, stated that any abortion is a crime. More: every abortion should be investigated criminally to prove that it was practiced in the cases of “exclusion of illegality” provided for by law – whether it was the result of rape, if it poses a risk to the life of the pregnant woman or if there is anencephaly of the fetus.
An online campaign against the manual is circulating on social media, with links to a petition already signed by about 40 thousand people, some quite famous.
“URGENT: tomorrow morning there will be a public hearing to discuss the new manual on abortion of the Ministry of Health, which provides that people who have been subjected to sexual violence and have legally aborted are investigated by the police”, said Dira Paes , Camila Pitanga, Ana Hikari and many others, in a collective text created to advertise the campaign.
The posts also recalled the recent case of the 11-year-old girl who was raped and denied the right to legal abortion. “We cannot allow cases like that of the girl from Santa Catarina to repeat themselves. People who have become pregnant as a result of rape, who carry an anencephalic fetus or who are at risk of dying if they continue the pregnancy, need to access the abortion service in a safe and humanized way, “he said.
The artists called on their followers to put pressure on the Ministry of Health so that the project does not go ahead: ‘The Ministry has opened a channel for people like you and me to talk about the manual.’ [frase dita à menina de Santa Catarina]! Ask them to take care of our girls. “
Marcela McGowan added another protest: “The victim is not a suspect! It is unacceptable that a manual from the Ministry of Health encourages the investigation of victims of sexual violence attempting to access the legal abortion service!”
The promotion was attended, among many others, by the singers Teresa Cristina and Maria Rita, the director Kleber Mendonça Filho and the comedian Gregorio Duvivier.
The preliminary text was developed by the Secretary of Primary Health Care of the Ministry of Health and anti-abortion activist Raphael Câmara.
“There is no ‘legal’ abortion as commonly referred to, even in technical texts”, reads the draft of the manual. “What exists is abortion with the exclusion of illegality. Every abortion is a crime, but when situations of exclusion of illegality arise after police investigations, it is no longer punished, such as termination of pregnancy at maternal risk” .
The initiative generated the repudiation of the experts. The Brazilian Federation of Associations of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Febrasgo) regretted that there is an effort to produce a “manual” with “numerous errors and inconsistencies”, underlining recommendations that go against all definitions of international organizations in the sector, in defense of mothers vine.
“Febrasgo reiterates that yes, there is legal abortion in Brazil, abortion should be treated as a public health issue and that the construction of care documents and regulations should count on the participation of scientific societies representing the professionals involved. in health care, “says Febrasgo in an official statement on the subject.
The hearing of the “abortion manual” should begin at 9 am and will be broadcast on the Ministry of Health’s YouTube.

🚫 We cannot allow cases like the SC girl to repeat themselves. People who have become pregnant as a result of rape, who carry anencephalic fetuses or who are at risk of dying if they continue to become pregnant must access the abortion service in a safe and humane way.
