Matteo, nephew of Andrea Legaretta, died at the age of 14 on March 22 after a fall on a motorcycle that caused severe brain damage.
The news of the minor’s death was confirmed through social networks by Nico Legarreta, Mateo’s cousin.
“We’ll miss you carnalito. I love you and I’ll miss you. I’m sure you’ll continue with the bikes there. See you soon. I love you. Watch over us,” he wrote on his Instagram stories.
Jero, Mateo’s younger brother, dedicated a farewell message to him on the same social network: “We love you Mateo, you will never leave our hearts.
God will take care of you up there brother. I love you with all my heart. “What a great time we had.”
Andrea Legarreta reacted to the touching post and sent all her love to her nephew: “My beautiful boy, the best brother! The best siblings! How lucky we are to have each other and to have the best parents. She will always be the best love team And Mateo will always be with you and live inside of you. I love you my Jero, you are wonderful and wonderful. I am so proud to be your and Mateo’s manina. Always with you love!”

The motorcycle accident happened on March 20 and Mateo was hospitalized. At the time, he had not regained consciousness and was in critical condition, preparing to undergo surgery to stop a brain bleed.
Valentina MartÃnez, Mateo’s mother, shared in multiple Instagram stories on March 20 that her son had been airlifted to Memorial Hermann Children’s in Houston, where they were hoping for a miracle.
The family joined in prayer and remained hopeful that Mateo would show improvement in the next 24 to 48 hours, which were the most critical.
On March 21, Valentina MartÃnez shared on Instagram that Mateo’s health was very delicate. Brain inflammation persisted and affected other bodily functions.
A CT scan was scheduled to evaluate his brain function and make decisions.
“Today life brings us to a situation we never thought of, we are in a nightmare. I ask myself a thousand times why? And I can’t find any answer. The only thing left for us is to cling to God and the Virgin, in them is the control and decision of what is going to be done with Mateo,” he wrote.
Valentina also shared that she spoke directly to her son, telling him that it would be fine if he decided to leave.
“Right now, more than ever, we need a miracle. Mateo, we are here by your side, we won’t let you go until you make up your mind. I will always be grateful to be your mother and love you the way I love you,” concluded Valentina MartÃnez.
