Politicized and fearless, Osmar Prado and Humberto Martins do not spare criticism of the broadcaster
Who’s afraid of Globo? Most actors never question the most important channel on Brazilian television. Fear of not being called for a new job. This is not the case for two artists with respected voices inside and outside the art scene.
Humberto Martins expressed dissatisfaction with the broadcaster in an interview with surfer Rico de Souza’s “Aloha Podcast”. “There were soap operas that I asked to abandon, because of so much disorder, so much degradation and incompetence on the part of the production,” he said. It is known that he left “Kabanacan” (2003) and “Summer 90” (2019).
He said he doesn’t accept that the “privileges” of some actors harm the work of others. In 2022, after three years away from Globo and without a fixed contract, he receives an invitation from his friend Gloria Perez to do ‘Travessia’.
Martins believes the soap opera author had to fight hard to be rehired on TV. He is aware that the powerful people on the channel do not like criticism and his autonomy.

At 63, Humberto lives in the North American state of Florida, where he loves life in contact with nature. He shows no concern about returning to Globo. The actor will appear in the film ‘O Auto da Compadecida 2’, out in December.
On the other side of the political spectrum is Osmar Prado, 76, an artist with a strong presence on the left. In 2022, after receiving the “Best of the Year” award for “Domingão com Huck” for his performance as Velho do Rio in “Pantanal”, he attacked the Bolsonaro government.
“With the soap opera we managed to give some joy to our people, who have been badly mistreated in the last four years. Our people have been disrespected for the last four years.”
Despite the character’s success in the remake, Osmar’s contract was not renewed. Shortly thereafter he was asked to make the Globoplay soap opera “Guerreiros do Sol”, which has not yet been released. He immediately refused.
“A person I didn’t even know called me to negotiate a salary over the phone and offered me less than I earned, imagine, I’ve never seen anything like that on Globo,” reported Dirceu Alves Jr., on ‘Estadão’. “I have never accepted humiliation in my career.”
In recent years all actors have been offered lower salaries due to the financial restructuring policy in the Marinho family’s communications group.
Osmar was also contacted to participate in “Renascer”. It would be a tribute to Tião Galinha’s interpretation in the original 1993 version. The artist said “no”. He stated his commitment to the theater and that his presence could disturb Irandhir Santos, who plays the character in the remake.
Humberto Martins and Osmar Prado verbalize what countless former globals think, but they don’t have the courage to say it for fear of never being chosen by Globo again: the veterans who have made the history of the channel’s television drama are replaced by young actors who cost much less and they don’t complain about anything.
