Eddie Murphy confirmed that “Shrek 5” is in development by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks and also revealed the film’s release date. Additionally, the star also stated that Donkey will be getting a spin-off movie.
Eddie Murphy revealed in a new interview with “Collider” that he has already started recording vocals for “Shrek 5” and will then make a derivative film of “Donkey.” “We started recording Shrek 4 or 5 months ago. I did it, I recorded the first act and we’ll do it this year, we’ll finish it. Shrek is coming out and Donkey is getting his own movie. We’ll also do Donkey. So let’s do a Shrek and a [filme] do Burro,” he said, specifying that the film will be released in 2025.
The “Shrek” franchise released four feature films between 2001 and 2010. The original “Shrek” turned DreamWorks Animation into a powerhouse studio, with worldwide revenues of $487 million. The film became the first Oscar winner in the animated film category. “Shrek 2” grossed $928 million and both films competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Although “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek After” received less praise than the first two films, they still managed to gross $813 million and $752 million worldwide, respectively.
Murphy told Entertainment Tonight in 2023 that he would make a fifth “Shrek” movie “in two seconds flat” if he were ever asked to reprise “Donkey.”
