Heir to the throne of Spain, Leonor de Asturias pursues her goals and acquires ever more power

Columnist specializing in the Spanish monarchy, Jaime Peñafiel reported that Princess Leonor, 18, heir to the throne of the Bourbon dynasty, suffers from narcolepsy. The Royal House of Spain has neither denied nor confirmed the content of the matter.

According to Dr. Dráuzio Varella’s website, it is “a sleep disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness during the day, even when the person sleeps well at night. Sleep attacks can occur at any time and in unusual situations.”

Without a cure, the disease requires control with medications and rigorous habits to prevent the sufferer from suddenly “fainting” and becoming vulnerable.

On “BBB21,” singer Pocah inspired memes for sleeping too much and having little inclination for group dynamics. Months after the reality show ended, she sought medical help and was diagnosed with narcolepsy.

The same disorder served as inspiration for the creation of the character Camila, played by Claudia Ohana in the soap opera “Fera Ferida”, broadcast on Globo in the 1990s. With a surreal aura, the girl spent months in a deep sleep.

In 2019, Jaime Peñafiel revealed in a book that King Felipe VI, Princess Leonor’s father, suffered from narcolepsy. “He fell asleep standing up,” he wrote. The diagnosis would explain the uncontrollable sleepiness that affected the nobleman during his school years. Some experts believe that the disease has a multifactorial origin and may be hereditary.

Since she came of age, Leonor de Asturias has intensified her public appearances. In July, she will travel to Portugal, where she will be received by the country’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

It is rare to see such a young heir to the throne alone on an official engagement abroad. Always smiling, the princess is gaining more and more support among her Spanish subjects. She shows the potential to be a popular queen.
