The Netflix soap opera also has the best performances of the careers of Vladimir Brichta and Paloma Duarte
To say that a series is based on clichés is misleading. Like all productions closer to telenovela than to series, “Pedaço de Mim” relies heavily on already known devices – sometimes, with some exaggeration – but nevertheless, compared to current production, Netflix’s work is victorious by far.
This is due not only to the innovative idea of Ângela Chaves – a woman pregnant with twins from different fathers – but also to the greater freedom granted by the streaming platform to its author. Some topics would hardly be treated with such objectivity in a plot of Globo or Record, for example the case of rape and the removal of the condom without consent, just to mention a few examples portrayed without euphemisms.
The greatest asset of “Piece of Me”, however, is called Juliana Paes. It cannot be said that the actress does not have iconic characters. From her debut as Ritinha, in “Laços de Família”, to Jackie Joy (“Celebrity”), Bibi Perigosa (“A Força do Querer”), Maria Marruá (“Pantanal”) or Jacutinga (“Renascer”), the actress Has always done solid and consistent work. But it is in this series of 17 chapters that the star shows that maturity has made her one of the greats of her generation.
Liana, a woman wounded and oppressed by doubt and the constant machismo around her, at the same time strong, appears delicate. With a lower tone of voice and careful about the way she behaves, Juliana builds a character full of nuances, with whom the viewer sympathizes even in moments of great fragility. Yes, just like in soap operas, the passivity of the characters in the name of the plot can be a bit irritating and the text, normally rich, sometimes gives in to didacticism – as happens in some scenes of episodes 8 and 9.
None of this, however, compromises the final result. In addition to having a strong protagonist, “Pedaço de Mim” also has a victorious cast. Vladimir Brichta and Paloma Duare shine in what are also some of the best roles of their careers. The charismatic characters played by João Vitti, Martha Nowill and even the villain played by Felipe Abib have great moments. And the young people played by Bento Veiga and Agatha Marinho are great revelations.
In short, in its first foray into the genre, Netflix shows Globo and Record that there will always be room to learn and evolve.
