At 65 – and nearly 50 in the media – the singer reflects on her career, her children and the current moment in her life
Singer Gretchen reflected on maturity and her relationship with work in an interview with Quem magazine, this Friday 19th. After almost 50 years of activity in Brazilian entertainment, she confesses that today work has another value: “When we pass. At 60 you work to keep your mind busy. To feel useful, important. If you don’t work, it seems like life is over.”
Gretchen reconciles her media identity with “Maria”, her given name, who according to her leads a seemingly ordinary life: “Maria is the one who stays at home, who cooks, takes care of the house, the granddaughter, the daughter, the husband…”
At 65, with her children raised—which she had at the height of her career—she says she has the stability of life and financial independence she needs. “When I look at my children who are college graduates and married, I feel very powerful, more than myself. (laugh).”
The singer now lives in Portugal and is married to the musician Esdras de Souza49 years old, and six children.
