‘Dawson’s Creek’ star dead at 51: ‘horrific’ accident before death

Obi Ndefo, known for his roles in series such as ‘Dawson’s Creek’ and ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’, has died aged 51.

The actor’s sister, Nkem Ndefo, announced the death on Saturday night, August 31, through a Facebook post.

“I am devastated by the loss of my little brother and knowing he is finally at peace,” she wrote in a message that accompanied a photo of the two.

What did Obi Ndefo die of?

Hours later on September 1, via X (formerly Twitter), Nkem Ndefo shared more details about what happened to Obi Ndefo.

“He died early Wednesday morning at a Los Angeles area hospital. Tragically, Obi’s heart was broken in his long battle with the eating disorder orthorexia,” he said.

According to Mexico’s Ministry of Health, orthorexia is characterized by an obsession with eating healthy foods and the right portions.

This Monday 2, he went on to explain, based on the fact that for the interpreter “it would be an honor to tell his story in the hope that others could also get help”, what happened.

“It started as a raw vegan, which in retrospect was the beginning of orthorexia, as it was more about controlling food than health. The severity only got worse,” he said.

“New research shows a strong link between the immune system and eating disorders,” he said.

“But unfortunately, conventional treatment centers have not caught up with the research, so my brother was never tested or treated,” he added.

Finally, she criticized that, in her opinion, “the separation between psychiatry and neurology and immunology is so harmful.”

Obi Ndefo lost both legs after running

In August 2019, after teaching a class at the Peace Yoga Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, Obi Ndefo stopped by Erewhon Market to buy his food.

He was putting his groceries in the cooler in the trunk of his parked car when a van speeding down Beverly Avenue left his lane and crashed into him.

As a result, Obi was left with his right leg amputated and his left leg hanging by the skin. The driver fled while bleeding to death.

He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital where orthopedic surgeon Milton Little amputated his left leg to save his life.

Despite what happened, months later, Ndefo stated that he did not allow what happened to break his spirit and prevent him from moving forward.

“What happened to me is horrible, why should I make it worse by feeling bad about it? I didn’t even have to choose positivity,” he told the Los Angeles Times in December of that year.
