The documentaries try to clarify the mysteries surrounding the outcomes of the lives of two women who marked an era
Two cases that have marked the recent history of Brazil have been the subject of an in-depth investigation through documentaries on Netflix and Disney+. To this day, the stories of Eliza Samúdio and Priscila Belfort have never come to fruition because both have never been found, neither alive nor dead. What we see, however, is that the fascination with the fame of the characters involved in the plots, social influence and machismo dominated the proceedings. And they got in the way – a lot.
In the case of the ex-girlfriend of goalkeeper Bruno, until then a star of Flamengo, the many appeals she made were of no avail. Eliza went to the police, to the prosecutor’s office, to television. No one listened to her as they should have or protected her. Although the athlete was accused of murder was celebrated by fans, the mother of his child was judged by the media, as if she was just another “kick mary”.
In the documentary with an hour and forty minutes of investigation, it is clear how machismo dominated the entire conversation. No one wanted to tell their version of events as they should have, on the contrary. Even today, in fact, there is a legend according to which Eliza’s body was devoured by dogs, which scientific expertise has disproved.
In the case of Priscila Belfort, sister of a famous fighter, TV presenters took up the case and even offered rewards. One of them even said he would send cameras and a team to the home of anyone who filed a complaint. Frighteningly, there were those who provided false information to flirt with the police chief.
Even stranger is the fact that the Civil Police did not authorize any officer to issue a statement for the series, which, among other things, mentions her then boyfriend, but does not say his name because he is the son of a famous politician of Rio. de Janeiro. There are loose threads in the investigation that need to be tied up. to defend the powerful, these lines of diligence were not pursued.
None of the stories have an ending. None of those allegedly involved have clarified everything. Being a woman in Brazil still means being under constant judgement. And it is very sad to see this when citizens don’t even have the right to say goodbye to their families – or to be found.
