Brazilian boxing icon, Maguila died this Thursday (24 years old), aged 66. In 2013, the athlete was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), an incurable disease whose symptoms are very similar to Alzheimer’s. The problem is caused by excessive blows to the head and is a consequence of a successful fighting career.
The rarity of Maguila’s condition led the fighter to make an important decision in 2018: with the approval of his family, he will donate his brain for studies at the University of São Paulo (USP). The organ will be analyzed by a team that will try to understand the consequences of repeated blows to the head during sporting activity. Research is also essential to create prevention measures.
