The artist has been battling cancer since early 2023; he removed the tumors in a procedure that took about 20 hours
Malu Barbosa, partner and friend of Preta Gilprovided an update on the singer’s health. Preta, who has been suffering from cancer since the beginning of 2023, had the tumors removed on Thursday the 19th in an operation that lasted about 20 hours.
“Everything is fine here. Everything as expected. Thanks for the messages and the positive energy. Preta is very strong”, wrote Malu on the morning of Saturday 21st.
The medical intervention was carried out at the Sírio-Libanês hospital, in São Paulo, where she is still hospitalized. Initially the operation was supposed to be carried out on Sunday 15th, but it was postponed.
On Friday, Flora Gil, Preta’s stepmother, told the magazine Who that the singer underwent a good surgery: “Long as expected, and now the medical team will analyze the recovery day by day. We know that it will be slow and therefore calm and day by day will be our goal.”
On social media, musician Francisco Gil, Preta’s son, also spoke out about the medical intervention. “She’s a warrior and she got through this too. We’re still strong. Lots of love. Axé,” he said.
Preta Gil was diagnosed with bowel cancer in early 2023. Among the symptoms that made her suspect a health problem were intense constipation and flat stools, with mucus and blood.
At that time, she underwent radiation therapy and surgical treatment. The artist also had to undergo a total abdominal hysterectomy, an operation that involves the removal of the uterus.
After primary treatment, he entered a phase without manifestation of the disease, commonly called “remission”, according to doctors heard by Estadão. In other words, the cancer was no longer detectable by physical examinations, imaging, tomography and/or blood tests.
In August 2024, however, the artist reported that the cancer had returned and was detected in two lymph nodes, in the peritoneum – the membrane in the abdominal cavity that surrounds organs such as the stomach and intestines – and in the ureter.
