Creator of SBT and other companies, he hid the game by amassing much more money than the market assumed
In 2023, “Forbes” magazine valued Silvio Santos’ fortune at R$1.6 billion. It is now known that the assets he left behind are much larger: R$6.4 billion, of which R$429 million is in a bank in the Bahamas.
The information was disclosed in the column ‘Outro Canal’, written by Gabriel Vaquer on F5, based on documents from a trial of the heiresses.
No national or foreign ranking has made an approximate calculation of the wealth accumulated by the SBT founder and host.
Why were they so wrong? Probably due to the discreet way in which Silvio Santos has always managed his assets, without revealing numbers or flaunting his financial growth.
Another reason: the difficulties of some companies in his group. In 2010, for example, the Banco Panamericano fraud scandal broke. A loss of R$2.5 billion.
The businessman saw his credibility at risk and asked the government for help. “When that Banco Panericano scam happened, Silvio Santos called me very worried. I was president of the Republic. He was afraid of being arrested,” Lula said.
The Credit Guarantee Fund paid a truckload of money to prevent the bank from failing and, with the situation minimally under control, the presenter sold the institution to solve the problem.
The end of the sales ‘fever’ of Tele Sena and Baú da Felicidade and the low profits of SBT in recent years have also made the market believe in the loss of a significant part of the communicator’s capital.
Silvio Santos, once again, surprises. He knew not only how to protect, but how to enhance his business. And, wisely, he shared his life with his 6 daughters. According to experts, this is an intelligent attitude to avoid future problems – including family disputes – related to inheritance and the execution of the will.
Accumulated from scratch during his time as a street vendor, the R$6.4 billion doesn’t leave Silvio Santos far behind Globo’s three owners. Each of Roberto Marinho’s main heirs owns around R$9 billion.
The iconic ‘Trunk Man’ died at the age of 93, in August last year. More than lots of money and a communications empire, he left an incalculable artistic legacy and inspiration to millions of enterprising Brazilians.
