Pope’s substitute will be announced immediately after his death; Understand the process

With the beginning of the “Set Vagar”, the Vatican is preparing for the conclave that will define the next Pontiff after Francisco’s death; Understand the process

The Vatican grew in mourning on Monday (21) with the confirmation of the death of the Pope Francisat 88 years old. The pontiff died at 7:35, at the time of Rome, at Casa Santa Marta – an official residence where he lived since the beginning of his papacy. The information was officially confirmed by Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrellwhich now leads to the provisional administration of the Catholic Church.

Born Jorge Mario BergoglioFrancisco went to history as the first Latin American pope, taking on the maximum position of the church in 2013, after the resignation of Bento XVI. With his death, the Vatican begins the period known as “vacant headquarters”, marked by traditional ceremonies and preparation for the next conclave.

How does the choice of the new Pope work?

The initial responsibility falls on Camerlengo, which has a duty to officially verify death. This includes a medical examination and the name of the pope’s baptism, made three times. After confirmation, the destruction of the “fishing ring” and the lead seal is ordered, avoiding any risk of falsifying official documents.

The news is then communicated to the cardinals and world leaders, while the press room of the Holy See issues a public note. In mourning, the Vatican flag is placed in the middle of the tree and the bells of the Soam of the Basilica of San Pietro in honor of the Pope.

During this period, only routine administrative decisions are maintained, with suspension in reforms, appointments and government affairs. The body of Pope Francis will be veiled in the Basilica of St. Peter, allowing the faithful to say goodbye. The funeral will follow traditional rituals, but with more discreet ceremonies, as Francisco himself had requested.

Between 15 and 20 days after death, the conclave will be summoned, collecting cardinals under 80 years in the Sistine Chapel. Isolated, they will secretly vote until they reach two thirds of the votes to elect the new church leader. The smoke that comes out of the fireplace indicates the result of each vote: black when there is no consensus and white with the choice of the new pope.

When the successor is elected, he will be announced in the world with the traditional phrase: “Habemus Papam!”, Followed by his first apostolic blessing before the crowd gathered in the square of San Pietro.
