Kim Kardashian made headlines last March by appearing at the Balenciaga show at Paris Fashion Week covered in duct tape, but drew attention for showing off her ‘garbage bag’.
Kardashian revealed in her Instagram stories that the famous fashion house gave her the bag, inspired by the classic garbage bags, which she had just presented on the catwalk.
“Look what I have. I have the “garbage bag”. I’m so excited. How cool is that?” she said excitedly at the time.
Officially named the ‘Trash pouch’, the bag is part of Balenciaga’s Winter 2022 collection and was designed by the brand’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia.
Balenciaga Launches ‘World’s Most Expensive Garbage Bag’
Months after its launch and after making sure Kim Kardashian was the first to own it, Balenciaga has finally put its ‘garbage bag’ up for sale, and its price is already causing controversy.
According to The New York Post, the luxury piece, which is made of calf leather, not plastic, and features the fashion house’s logo, retails for $1,790.
After showing at Paris Fashion Week, Gvasalia admitted in an interview with Women’s Wear Daily that she created the bag, available in black, white, yellow and blue, to stir up controversy.
“I couldn’t pass up the chance to make the world’s most expensive trash bag, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?” he said.
So far, Kardashian, who has been a Balenciaga ambassador since January, has not commented on the “garbage bag” launch, but there is already backlash online.
“My crap isn’t fancy enough for that,” wrote Twitter user Chris Belcher. Ellen Coughlan, for her part, said: “Balenciaga is trolling us!”
Controversial Balenciaga bags
The “garbage bag” is not Balenciaga’s first controversial piece. In 2017, Demna Gvasalia created an IKEA-inspired shopping bag that cost more than $2,000.
Upon its launch, the Scandinavian chain issued a statement in which it politely pointed out that its original bag was much cheaper.
“We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga bag resembles IKEA’s iconic $0.99 blue bag. Nothing beats the versatility of a big blue bag,” it posted today.
In September 2021, the fashion house released its $1,280 print shopper check bag, inspired by tati bags that cost less than $5.
