The premiere of the biographical film took place on Tuesday evening, the 21st Mauricio de Sousa – The film. In a rare appearance, in a wheelchair, the 89-year-old cartoonist celebrated, together with his son Mauro Sousa, the arrival of the work that will reveal his life.
Mauro plays the father in the plot and was also present at the event, which took place at the Cinemateca Brasileira, in Sao Paulo, on the occasion of the 49th Sao Paulo International Film Festival. The film follows Mauricio de Sousa’s journey from childhood to the invention of the famous Turma da Mônica characters and will be released in cinemas on Thursday 23rd.
The creator of Brazil’s most famous comics was applauded upon his arrival at the event. His son, Mauro, was moved by the creation of the work and by the affection of the public: “During the making of the film, I had to recover my most beautiful memories with my father, of hugs, affection, kisses, travel, and it was a very special process for me and very close to my father.”
“I already thought I admired him, but I started to admire and love him even more […] It’s an honor to be this boy’s son and an even greater honor to be able to experience all this with him right now,” Mauro added.
In an interview with Estadaothe film’s director Pedro Vasconcelos told more about the work. “We know the great Maurício, with all this work spread all over the world. How did it start? What was the initial process like? A boy, a blank sheet of paper, a pencil in his hand. Suddenly, this simplicity turns into a work with such a great impact on so many generations, on millions of Brazilians,” he said.
The film shows the beginning of Mauricio’s passion for comics, his relationship with his father, mother, sisters and grandmother Dita, a formative figure in his life. The journey to the capital to pursue the dream of earning a living by drawing and the difficulties along the way are also told.
