How Tico Santa Cruz lost 20kg and reached 9% body fat to become a triathlete

Singer Tico Santa Cruz of the band Detonautas has revealed how he lost 20kg and achieved just 9% body fat to become a triathlete

This Friday (31st), Detonators presents “Potinho de Veneno”, his first new single in two years. The song was born from the immersion of Tico Santa Cruz48, in the biographies of Rita Leewhich served as inspiration for the song’s narrative. At the same time, the singer is going through a period of intense personal transformation, balancing his concert routine with swimming, running and cycling training, preparing for his first triathlon. He reports that he was able to lose 20kg and reduce his body fat to 9%.

The composition, signed by Tico, Pablo Bishop AND Ruxellmixes elements of indie rock and pop. “I have become very involved in the world of Rita Leeand I started writing lyrics that had some nuances of his vocabulary. It’s a different narrative than that Detonators they usually use. We have a more motivational tone and this song is almost like a story,” the singer tells GQ Brasil. Off stage, Tico seek inspiration from artists like Harry Styles31st Dexter Holland59 years old, who combines an intense itinerant life with sport. “Seeing these people who have a bizarre routine of international touring, time zones, motivates me to be able to balance all these activities,” he adds.

Education and mental health

Since 2018, swimming has been a fundamental part of the artist’s routine, initially to treat a herniated disc. During the pandemic it became a refuge: “It was what saved me at that moment, because in my building it was allowed to swim in the pool alone. I swam throughout the pandemic,” he recalls. The practice has evolved into a comprehensive regimen, including running, cycling and weight training. “Since I had been swimming and running for a while, I said to myself, ‘Why not add a bike?’ Despite my age, I started seeing great results, not just aesthetically, but in terms of my health,” he says.

Today, Tico maintains 10 hours of training a week, balancing shows and exercises. His eating habits were adequate, favoring vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates in the right proportion, without following restrictive diets. Additionally, he shares collective training sessions with fans in “Rock Trainings”. “In the future I want to organize a competition with the show Detonators in the end. This is my biggest goal for next year,” he reveals.
