empire of lightThe drama, set in the early 1980s with the backdrop of the great British coastal cinema, had its world premiere at the Duke Theater of the Telluride Film Festival on Saturday afternoon and turned out to be the biggest audience of the festival until the moment.
A smart, unpretentious, old-fashioned movie that doesn’t intend to set the world on fire, but is solid and satisfying. empire of light, which Searchlight will release on December 9, appears to be a strong Oscar contender given the reception it has received here; your writer/director credits, Sam Mendesand its protagonist, olivia colman; And the fact that the Academy loves few things more than a good movie about cinema.
Mendes, who presented the film (along with Coleman and future co-star bedroom miguel joining via Zoom), he was a perfect fit for the Golden Age of Hollywood as he proved he could make virtually any movie from home dramas. Although the entire cast of the film is superbly cast, including toby jones s grumpy Tania In the small roles that make the most of it, Colman is exceptional, as always, and I would be very surprised if the Academy considered five more female performances to overshadow her. If he gets the nomination, it will be his fourth in five years. Favorite (2018), Dad (2020) and lost daughter (2021), a rather surprising statistic.
Another equally notable contribution that is likely to attract the attention of the Academy is the legendary two-time Oscar winner. It’s too early to say yes or no empire of light I could figure out the film, director, and original screenplay categories (Mendes would be personally eligible for each), but it’s definitely not out of the question. Of course, you can count on Searchlight to give you as much of a boost as possible.
