The former Spice Girl reveals she was sexually abused on the eve of the group’s first gig

Singer Melanie Chisholm, also known as Mel C, said she was sexually assaulted the night before her first performance with the Spice Girls. The revelation was made in the singer’s biography, titled “Who I Am”, which hit US bookstores this Thursday (9/15).

Chisholm was assaulted in 1997 by a massage therapist at a hotel spa in Istanbul, Turkey, where she and the other Spice Girls were staying. At the time the singers called the front desk to explain what had happened, but the masseuse had already left.

“We had never done a full show before, so obviously we rehearsed for weeks, with costumes, makeup, hair, everything was bringing us up to everything I always wanted to do and always wanted to be,” Chisholm said on the “How to fail”.

As everything was going well, Chisholm said he decided to “get a massage”. “And what happened to me – I buried it, right away, because there were other things to focus on,” she said. “I didn’t want to make a fuss, but I didn’t even have time to deal with it.”

It wasn’t until he started writing his memoirs, 25 years after the event, that he decided it was time to talk about it.

“It came to me in a dream, or I woke up and it was in my mind,” she said. “And I was like, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t even think about writing that in the book.’ So obviously I had to think, ‘Well, do I want to reveal it?’ And I realized that telling this was really important for me to finally come to terms with it and process what happened. “

The singer described her experience as a “mild version” of sexual assault, but states that “I felt violated. I felt very vulnerable. I was ashamed.”

He said he didn’t quite understand what had happened at the time. “I was in an environment where you undress for this professional,” she said. “So there were so many thoughts and feelings. I felt like I had to talk about it because he hit me. But I buried him and I’m sure a lot of men and women do.”

Chisholm also talked about how the success of the Spice Girls impacted her health. “I’ve been really sick for a few years,” she said. “When I look back, I don’t know how I did physically, considering how little I lived and how much exercise I was doing, combined with a brutal program.”

She was diagnosed with clinical depression, anorexia, binge eating disorder, anxiety, and agoraphobia and consistently took antidepressants during her time in the band.
