The painful fate of Roberto Carlos: to bury his wives, children and great friends

Singer deals with yet another loss as he prepares for the traditional end-of-year show at the Globe

Actress Fernanda Montenegro, now 93, once said that the worst thing about advancing into old age is watching loved ones die.

Roberto Carlos lives this burden imposed by longevity. The 81-year-old singer-songwriter faces the pain of another goodbye.

On the phone, from his apartment, he said a few words to his musical partner and ‘soul mate’ Erasmo Carlos, who was unconscious in his hospital bed. Shortly thereafter, Tremendão died. He was also 81 years old.

“My pain is very great,” commented Roberto through his adviser. Another heartbreaking loss for the king of Brazilian popular music. His trajectory is marked by successive dramas.

In 1990, he buried his ex-wife, Nice, who was a victim of breast cancer. They had two children, Dudu and Luciana, and remained friends after their separation.

Nine years later, he saw up close the martyrdom of his third wife, Maria Rita. It’s been months of fighting widespread cancer. She passed away in late 1999 at the age of 38.

The romantic idol has suffered another emotional blow with the sudden death of his beloved daughter Ana Paula, from his first marriage in Nice. I could not resist a cardiac arrest. I was 45 years old.

In September 2021, death tested Roberto Carlos’ strength and faith once again. He was forced to say goodbye to his son Dudu, who died of peritoneal cancer at the age of 52.

The singer deals with his emotional pain away from the media. He rarely leaves his apartment in Urca, a bucolic neighborhood south of Rio. Sometimes he goes to the parish of Nossa Senhora do Brasil a few meters from the building. His recording studio is just a few streets away.

In a 2004 interview, the artist revealed that he has never gotten over the “physical absence” of the loved ones he has lost. “But I’m learning to live with it,” she said. From now on you will have to overcome the void left by the farewell of Erasmo Carlos.

On the 29th, Roberto Carlos will perform at the Qualistage, in Barra da Tijuca, Rio. The presentation will turn into his own end-of-the-year special on Globo, airing Dec. 23. The production prepares a tribute to the now eternal Tremendão.
