The SJSP (Union of Professional Journalists of São Paulo) is questioning CNN Brasil on possible irregularities in the layoffs carried out this Thursday (1/12). The institution accuses the channel of not having provided complete data on the layoffs or on the number of professionals affected.
The newscast deactivated the Rio de Janeiro branch and fired all employees, but the cuts also affected the San Paolo team, sparing not even medallions such as Monalisa Perrone and Boris Casoy.
“According to information gathered from various sources, more than 100 jobs have been extinguished in the various station squares,” the union said in posts published on social media.
Unable to organize a meeting to find out what was happening, the union representatives went to the station headquarters to ask for explanations. “In response, CNN did not provide the number of journalists fired, but said it would generally pay severance payments.”
According to the union, a new meeting has been scheduled to determine if the company has carried out a mass layoff. “In this case, the company was obliged to inform the union of the intention to fire. What was not done,” says the union.
The institution has also announced that it will hold a meeting with the fired professionals to collectively discuss the issue.
In a statement, CNN Brasil commented on the layoffs, saying it was a decision to “strengthen journalism”.
“In line with the strategy of strengthening journalism, the coordination of coverage will be concentrated in São Paulo and Brasilia, two places that are gaining relevance given the national political and economic context. As a result of this new logic, the Rio de Janeiro newsroom will be deactivated, subject to coverage. The changes include the readjustment of programs, as well as the grid. CNN’s soft seal will be restyled for 2023, “reads the official text.
Early in the morning, the Syndicate of Journalists received information about the layoffs at CNN Brasil: in a few hours, dozens of journalists who worked at the station’s headquarters (located on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo) lost their jobs.

We requested an emergency meeting, but received no response. Thus, we went to the broadcaster’s headquarters to ask for explanations: in response, CNN did not provide the number of sacked journalists, but generally stated that it would pay the severance pay.
