Activists and pundits pointed to racism in a question about the murder of George Floyd posed on the “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” chalkboard
Luciano Huck apologized this Tuesday 6, after a question based on the death of George Floyd was exposed on the board Who wants to Be a Millionairefrom Sunday with Huck, from TVGlobo. The question generated a lot of criticism of the presenter, as Huck asked black participant Flavio Rosa, a journalist from Minas Gerais, what Floyd said while being murdered by a policeman.
“Which of these sentences was uttered by George Floyd before he was assassinated in 2020 and became a cry of protest against racism?” was the question asked by the presenter, who was worth R$5,000 in the quiz. The death of Floyd, a 47-year-old black man who was asphyxiated by a white police officer in the United States, has had international repercussions and generated many protests.
The use of the case for entertainment has been denounced as structural racism by activists and experts, who have used social networks to report the presenter, as well as criticizing the lack of knowledge on the part of the team that developed the quiz.
You are absolutely right about the question asked. I am increasingly aware of what I need to evolve in anti-racist literacy beyond intent. I don’t have pre-emptive access to questions and this time I didn’t have the presence of mind to react right away. I made a mistake. I apologize and let’s talk about it https://t.co/zFGbytxzML

The lawyer and professor of international law and human rights at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, Thiago Amparo, was one of the people who took a position, through a post, on what happened.
“Hello, Luciano Huck. I know you are following me here and we have already exchanged ideas! Shall we talk about this question? For black people, the Floyd case (and many other Brazilian Floyds) is traumatic to the point of making them put their last words in a quiz entertainment are unacceptable. And if you or your team would like to talk a little more about it, we’re here,” he said.
Huck then responded to the lawyer’s tweet and apologized. “You [Thiago Amparo] You are absolutely right about the question asked. I am increasingly aware of how far I need to evolve in anti-racist literacy beyond intent. I don’t have pre-emptive access to questions and this time I didn’t have the presence of mind to react right away. I made a mistake. I apologize. And let’s talk about it,” said the presenter.
Thiago then thanked him for his answer: “Thank you for writing to me privately and we started this dialogue. I understand that you only see the questions at the same time and that we have already talked about the racial issue other times. We continue to learn from each other at outside of Twitter, which is filled with hate. Big hug,” posted.
