Summer’s high temperatures are a cause for joy for some, but not for all. After all, the heat causes discomfort in many people, with sensations such as headaches, drops in blood pressure and excessive tiredness. Also, another common problem of the season is fluid retention in the body, mainly visible in the form of swelling.

The coordinator of Nutrition and Dietetics in São Cristóvão Saúde, Cintya Bassi, says that swelling is nothing more than an accumulation of fluid between tissue cells. It is the result of edema in very thin vessels (capillaries), which eventually leak fluid. According to the specialist, the problem mainly affects the region of the legs, hands, stomach and ankle.

“An easy way to notice retention in your body is when you take off your socks and shoes, when there’s a mark left by the elastic or details of the sock,” comments the coordinator. Also according to Cintya, lack of movement, stress and menstruation are among the aggravating factors.

“Also, at the end of a hot day, our circulation is slower and we have a harder time absorbing water from our bodies,” she explains. Therefore, for those who work sitting down, it is necessary to move the legs and do small stretches, so that the discomfort at the end of the day is less.

How to get rid of water retention

Contrary to what many think, ingesting fluids does not make the problem worse. The nutritionist says drinking water is essential, following the recommendation of 35ml/kg/day. “Dehydration is one of the factors that can stimulate the appearance of the problem. Therefore, the more water you ingest, the more toxins you will eliminate through the urine,” he advises.

In addition to this valuable advice, attention to diet is essential, as some options can increase bloating. “When you consume foods high in salt, such as sausages, canned foods, yellow cheese, soy sauce, ultra-processed and fast foods, your body needs to retain more water so that this mineral can be diluted. Hence, the body it does not let the water go though due to the accumulation of salt”, reveals the expert.

Probiotic foods, such as yogurt, are effective, however, as the live microorganisms make the intestinal flora healthier, as well as helping to better absorb nutrients and reduce bloating. Cintya also recommends fruits with a high diuretic power, as they share a good amount of nutrients that facilitate the elimination of liquids.

“Watermelon, melon, pineapple and pear are some examples. Their nutrients, potassium, magnesium, B-complex vitamins and water, together increase urine flow and help eliminate toxins with the renewal of body fluids,” points out the nutritionist.
