President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was one of the first Brazilians to receive the bivalent vaccine against covid-19, from Pfizer, this Monday 19. Geraldo Alckmin, vice president, was responsible for implementing the dose, as he is also a doctor . The event was broadcast live at the Guará Health Center in Brasilia and marks the start of immune vaccination in the country.
The bivalent vaccine is able to immunize against more than one version of a virus at the same time, like Omicron. For this to happen, the technology used is that of mRNA with two genetic codes. In the case of Pfizer, the codes of the original strain of the coronavirus and that of the Omicron variant, predominant in the most recent infections, are used.
In his speech, Lula said that the country now has a “Minister of Health who looks after the health of the country,” praising the work of Nívia Trindade, former president of Fio Cruz.
“[Ela] she was invited by me to be a minister because her background made us want a personality of her character, commitment and knowledge to try and care for the health of the poorest people in this country,” she said.
The president also said the symbolic event is a gesture to say that the country will have a vaccine for everyone who needs it, at all ages and in all places.
