The remediation operations are already underway at the Palazzo Vecchio and the mayor himself climbed a scaffolding, armed with a hose and brush, to help remove the paint. Luckily, there were professional restorers on the site who were working on a sculpture that is also on the Piazza della Signoria. They were able to advise on the proper way to clean the stone facade.
The Ultima Generazione group, which has been operating in Italy since December 2021, has claimed responsibility for the vandalism. According to him, the two members used washable orange paint and are part of the “We will not pay for fossils” campaign. The action would be a response to the fact that the Senate of the Republic rejected, Thursday (16), the amendments to a bill relating to the cut of some subsidies harmful to the environment.
