The refrigerator is an indispensable assistant in the kitchen, helping to keep food fresh as long as possible. We have collected in one document the storage conditions and rules for popular products.
Why is food stored in the refrigerator?
The cause of food spoilage is oxidative reactions and the multiplication of microorganisms in organic matter. At low temperatures, the growth of bacteria and the rate of nutrient breakdown slow down, so food stays fresh longer.
How to properly store food in the refrigerator
To increase the shelf life as much as possible, observe the following rules:
- After you return from the store, immediately unwrap the bags and place the food in the refrigerator.
- Do not store vegetables, fruits, berries and herbs in plastic bags, but rather put them in food containers or in a special drawer of the refrigerator.
- Different areas of the refrigerator maintain different temperatures. This must be taken into account when storing food.
- Raw meat and fish should be kept separate from other foods in the refrigerator to prevent the development of harmful bacteria.
- When the refrigerator is open, the door is subject to the greatest temperature fluctuations, so only products with long shelf lives, such as canning, store-bought sauces, packaged juices and carbonated drinks, can be stored on the side shelves.
- Do not forget to defrost and wash the refrigerator in time so that food does not spoil and an unpleasant smell does not spread.
Why Pasteurized Foods Are Stored in the Refrigerator
It is not recommended to store pasteurized dairy products in a warm place, as such conditions favor the growth of bacteria. The refrigerator is the best place to store most pasteurized foods. Certain types of pasteurized cheese are an exception. To determine the best storage method, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
