‘I thought it would only be good if I was skinny’: Tati Machado talks being fat on TV

Journalist won the public’s affection by ‘gossiping’ about ‘Big Brother’, soap operas and more on Globo mornings

After Rede Globo’s morning programming gained a special touch after Tati Machado made the “good gossip” in the “Encontro” program. The journalist participates in the morning by explaining the dynamics of “Big Brother Brazil” and bringing general themes of home entertainment.

In addition to the friendly manner that has won the affection of the public, Tati’s appearance also attracts attention. In an interview, she does not hide that she likes fashion and after she started working in TV, her concern for her has become more important. “I have a memory of wearing my mother’s clothes, my mother’s shoes and she was always a woman of fashion. I got to know each other a lot, knowing which pants flatter me, which colors don’t match,” she says.

Another point that the journalist does not overlook is the importance of having women like her, who do not conform to a pre-established television image standard, in a large-scale programme. “I took my body as it is. Beauty is beyond what we see in the mirror,” she says.

fat and handsome

The body is no longer a problem for Tati, who over time has learned to see the beauty in her features. “As I gained weight and got older, I put my vanity aside and started looking for what I needed. But, when I went on TV and saw that there are brands that dress fat women, I ended up connecting with the beauty of my body as it is,” she points out.

Want a gold tip from the mighty? We asked her what she wears most often: “I wear a lot of pants with a belt. I have three belts, one black, pink and leopard. In off-camera life, I hardly use it, but on TV, I do. And she had a preference for black clothes,” she reveals.

Beauty beyond what you see

Tati Machado also says that, fortunately, she has never felt pressure on her body at work and knows that many people at home identify with her image. “There’s no way I can’t take this flag with me, we have to occupy the spaces. It’s a daily job: every day you look in the mirror and say ‘you’re really sexy’”.

Of course, there was a time when Tati put more pressure on herself. Fatphobia, an issue related to prejudice against fat people, is a reality in Brazil.

According to the Obesity and Fatphobia — Perceptions 2022 survey, 85.3% of people considered obese in Brazil have experienced situations of fatphobia.

The survey was conducted in February 2022 by the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (Abeso) and the Brazilian Society of Metabology and Endocrinology (SBEM). “I thought it would only be good if I was skinny. I managed not to get hurt. I’m not the person to go on fad diets, etc., but there are days where I look in the mirror and think ‘What’s this?’” she vents.

Television has also ended up becoming an empowering and empowering space for Tati, who is more than happy when he receives positive messages from the public.
