An ancient practice, yoga emerged in India and is now spread across the world. Its purpose is to work the mind and body in an interconnected way and, in pursuit of this goal, promote a variety of benefits for its practitioners.
Unlike other physical activities, yoga is not intended to lose weight or gain muscle mass, for example. But what are the advantages of the practice? Are there any risks? Is there an age limit to start?
To answer these and other questions, the Earth spoke to physical education teacher Yuri Dourado. For five years she has dedicated herself to yoga lessons and here answers the questions of those who want to start practicing.
What are the benefits of yoga?
A greater perception of oneself, one’s body and one’s mind. By making amazing things we can do and discovering new skills we can develop. Yoga is very much about self-awareness as we explore our potential, whether it’s learning to balance on one foot or breathing through difficult times.
Who should do yoga?
Practice is recommended for all ages! It is not the student who adapts to the practice, but the practice which adapts to the student, [pois] this is the role of the teacher: to access everyone, respecting their needs and possibilities.
What is the ideal frequency?
The ideal regularity is one you can handle. Some people do it every day of the week, for hours, and some people do it twice a week for half an hour. What matters is doing. Everyone can use their current degree of availability to get started, even if it seems small at first.
When is the best time to do yoga?
There is no specified time. Perhaps, if you go into tradition, into profane texts, you will find something about the early hours of dawn. However, these days, the best time is when it comes. Practicality is better than idealization.
Are there any risks in practice?
Adhering to medical guidelines, the practice is very safe. It’s always important to go through a health tracking chart to find out if there are any injuries or needs that deserve double attention. Knowing the condition of the person’s body and health, it is easy to carry on the practice safely.
What care is needed for those who do yoga online?
The main cure is to respect one’s personal safety limit, not to do more than one knows one can do and to follow the teacher’s instructions with double attention.
