The success of tubal ligation reversal depends on factors such as how the technique was performed and the woman’s age.
In early March, the Law n. 14.443/2022, which changes the requirements needed to perform tubal ligation. The new law, in addition to putting an end to the spouse’s authorization requirement, reduced the minimum age to undergo the procedure from 25 to 21 years.

The method, offered free of charge by the Unified Health System (SUS), surgically obstructs the tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus, preventing the passage of sperm. In some cases tubal ligation reversal is even possible, but there are risks and the technique is much more complex compared to tubal ligation.
How is tubal ligation reversal performed?
According to gynecologist and obstetrician Dr. Rodrigo Rosa, tubal ligation reversal consists of reconnecting the channels broken in the original procedure using extremely fine sutures.
But this time, the channels to be reconnected are the fallopian tubes, where the sperm meets the egg to fertilize it. Also, the original scar is removed to improve the blood supply of the structure.
“It is worth noting, however, that if the end of the fallopian tubes was removed during tubal ligation, reversal is not possible. The same is true in cases where the fallopian tubes are dilated or diseased,” emphasizes the doctor.
According to him, even if tipping is possible, the woman must undergo an evaluation. This is because the success of the procedure depends on some factors, such as the method used in the ligation, the size of the scar, the time between the two operations, the skill of the surgeon and, above all, the age of the woman.
“But in general, the chances of pregnancy after tubal reversal are low. Also, when a woman manages to get pregnant, there is a greater risk of an ectopic pregnancy when it occurs outside the uterus,” warns the human reproductive specialist.
How to get pregnant after tubal ligation reversal?
In cases where tubal reversal cannot be performed or has been unsuccessful, it is possible to become pregnant through assisted reproductive procedures, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this technique, the egg is fertilized with sperm in the laboratory and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus.
“In women undergoing tubal ligation, the eggs are taken directly from the ovaries. Especially in the case of tubal ligation, in vitro fertilization, in general, it presents a higher chance of pregnancy than inversion. But the indication of the ideal procedure must be made by a specialist in human reproduction after an individualized evaluation of each couple,” she concludes.
