According to the dermatologist Giuliana Piquetwhich was present in Congress Annual meeting 2023in New Orleans, the main indication of the minoxidil oral is androgenic alopecia in men and women, although it is being studied with promising results in other types of alopecia.
“Among the main advantages is the convenience, as many patients are not adapted to topical use, which can change the texture of the hair, irritate the scalp and some are bothered by the smell”, comments the doctor, who is a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD).
What are the benefits of using oral Minoxidil to combat hair loss?
According to the dermatologist, oral minoxidil works by prolonging the anagen phase of hair growth and reducing telogen (shedding). Therefore, it causes an increase in the diameter and size of the wires.
Originally used since the 1970s as an antihypertensive for its vasodilatory properties, however, at much higher doses, the drug has shown good results for hair loss and growth at low doses.
“The most common side effects are hair growth in other sites such as the face and body, headache, lower limb edema and postural hypotension, generally more frequent with higher doses”says Juliana, who says the treatment has a clinical response after three months.
The expert warns that oral Minoxidil treatment is contraindicated in pregnant women, patients with pheochromocytoma (tumor in the adrenal glands), and should be used with caution in patients with heart disease or chronic kidney failure.
