A healthy diet contributes to the health of the intestines, the organ responsible for the onset of autoimmune diseases.
According to the Ministry of Health, autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system recognizes parts and proteins of the body itself as a foreign body. That is, he loses the ability to distinguish what is right from what is not. The picture leads to an increased production of antibodies against one’s own cells, tissues or organs.

Importantly, the entire autoimmunity process begins in the gut and starts with poor nutrition. This means that what we eat can activate or deactivate diseases that lie dormant in us.
The intestine and immunity
“Autoimmune disease is a disorder of the immune system that begins with the destruction of the intestinal mucosa. It is caused by a poor diet, intestinal dysbiosis, which leads to the difficulty of the intestine to filter and select what is good or bad for the organism . It is when the body itself does not distinguish between healthy cells and begins to attack itself through a change called molecular mimicry”, explains in detail Dr. Aurélio Relíquias, general practitioner and specialist in: longevity, nutrology, physiological homeostasis and modulation hormonal.
In this sense, inflammatory foods (such as refined sugar, sweets, processed juices and sodas); carbohydrates (such as white flour, gluten and seed oils); and foods high in preservatives (such as monosodium glutamate) are examples of products that worsen the symptoms of nearly every known autoimmune disease.
This is the case with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, osteoarthritis, lupus and dermatological problems, such as skin peeling and autoimmune dermatitis. Even unexplained allergies can be made worse by food. This occurs in conditions such as rhinitis, sinusitis and other diseases with no apparent cause.
Basically, all of these foods can increase inflammation in the body and worsen symptoms, causing pain, fatigue, tiredness, discouragement, among others. A healthy, anti-inflammatory diet is important for everyone, but it can be especially important for people with autoimmune diseases.
“Unfortunately, treatment with a more complete and integrative view of the body has been very little widespread. However, there is another way to treat an autoimmune disease that is not just with drugs,” says the doctor.
Food can relieve autoimmune diseases
Some studies show that certain foods can aggravate inflammation and disease symptoms. On the other hand, other options may help reduce inflammation and improve immune function.
This is what emerges from a study conducted by the National Center for Information on Biotechnology (NCBI) in the United States. A group of people with inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, followed a specific diet called autoimmune protocol (AIP)which resulted in a decrease in symptoms.
This is because the intestine, essential in the digestive process, is one of the most important and relevant organs when it comes to the immune system and autoimmune diseases.
Anti-inflammatory foods such as beef liver, animal viscera, chicken heart are rich in B vitamins, vitamins K2 MK7 and powerful antioxidants. Additionally, there are fish rich in omega-3s, DHA, as well as sunlight itself, which is directly linked to vitamin D3 production. All help reduce inflammation and improve immune function.
These foods also contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help keep the body healthy and strengthen the immune system, not by activating it, but by acting as anti-inflammatory and numbing the immune system.
“Food is a risk factor for causing inflammation in the body and triggering different pathologies with different clinical manifestations. inflammatory process or benefit from treatment,” concludes Aurélio.
