Sports injuries are usually caused by training errors or lack of adequate preparation.
Injuries in sporting activity are most often due to incorrect and repetitive training where there is excessive activity and lack of adequate preparation. However, with the necessary safety measures, it is possible for children to play sports without running so many risks. The regular practice of physical activity brings many benefits to the body and is essential for the development of children and adolescents. The list of positives is immense. Improves physical conditioning, prevents and treats obesity, overweight, sedentary lifestyle. In addition to the physical problem, sports practice tends to influence children’s moral and social development, training skills, teamwork, discipline, socialization, among others. If, on the one hand, we have several points in favor of sporting activity, it is also necessary to remember that strains, dislocations, fractures are part of the “package”, of the risk of this practice.
Before engaging in any physical activity:
It is very important to take your child or adolescent to a sports doctor for a comprehensive evaluation. After the doctor’s approval, monitoring by qualified professionals is of paramount importance to properly train sports gestures such as falling, jumping, for example, as well as sports orientation, as exaggerated or wrong practice can lead to injury.
Recommendations:
A
Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP),
through yours
Scientific Department of Child and Adolescent Safety
reinforces these recommendations and also underlines others, which must be observed before starting a session or a game:
- Each athlete must be evaluated by the doctor before starting the activity;
- The type of sport must be chosen on the basis of the age, growth (weight, height), global development, characteristics, abilities and preferences of the child and/or adolescent;
- Protective devices must be used, which are essential for sporting activity. These include a helmet, gloves, knee, elbow and genital protectors;
- Sports practice must be carried out with the presence of a trained and responsible coach for greater safety;
- Places for practicing sports must not be improvised or inappropriate, as this significantly increases the risk of injury;
- The athlete must wear suitable clothes and shoes for the sport and keep well hydrated, using sunscreen for sporting activities under the sun;
- It is important to know the rules of the sport, warm up properly and avoid exercising too much for your age and ability.
- The activity must be carried out only if the child and/or adolescent is in good health.
What if an injury occurs?
If, despite all precautions, an injury occurs, the child or adolescent must receive adequate treatment and return to sporting activities only when he has recovered. It is recommended that a qualified person be present during sports activities to provide first aid in the event of an accident and, if necessary, take the child for medical evaluation at the emergency service.
What is the most suitable sport?
According to
Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP)
you have to observe the attitudes and abilities of the child and what he likes.
- Children who are more centered and with good coordination can enjoy playing team sports, such as volleyball, basketball, soccer and handball;
- Children who are more restless or agitated, distracted, but work when motivated, have athletics or swimming as their best options;
- Perfectionist children, who possess self-control, may do better in individual sports, such as gymnastics, tennis, or martial arts;
- Children who are physically fit and strong can play sports such as boxing and rugby;
- Very agile children can play and usually enjoy any sport available;
- And, above all, respect the child/adolescent, his tastes, his choices, physical abilities, possibilities, personality and needs.
Careful Parents:
- It is therefore up to the parents to choose clubs or schools as good infrastructure.
- Ensure children are supported and guided by qualified and trained professionals for the function.
- Just as sporting activity is important, rest is also essential to restore the body.
