Studio Tan-gram architects explain methods and share cost-effective tips for including wood in decor
The use of wood, both for architecture and for decorating an environment, has always been a flagship over the decades.

Over the years, for example, the trends have been different: trunks, wardrobes, beds, parquet floors, mosaics, sturdy but also delicate furniture and, currently, the slatted and covered walls that have conquered the decor. After all, wood is both timeless and functional, because, like plasticine, it can be made into any piece by carpentry.
To better understand the use of this material, Monike Lafuente and Claudia Yamada, architects of Study Tangram who often use wood in their projects, revealed what makes it so special in decoration and in its relationship with people.
“Wood itself is a wildcard element that matches any style, going very well with the industrial, traditional, classic and contemporary. In all the proposals it combines a pleasant feeling of intimacy”, explain the professionals.
Another positive point, they point out, is his durabilitywhich becomes even more durable if there is protection against the sun’s rays – when care is not taken, there is a possibility that the wood will “burn” and change color.
“If it is a wall without sunlight, there is no reason to worry, because the wood alone will have a long life. Attention must then be paid to fumigation, because in the case of solid wood, there is the risk of termites”, warn the architects.
Typologies, styles and economic alternatives
One of the most striking characteristics of wood is its immense versatility, as well as the variety of styles and compositions that emulate its texture. On the other hand, its high cost is one of the main complaints of consumers wishing to use the material in decoration.
And, to save money, Claudia advises “not to work with solid wood or natural veneer, which cost more”. According to the architect, a recurrent way to save money is to invest in derivatives such as MDF wood, vinyl, polystyrene, adhesive, porcelain stoneware and ready-made porcelain stoneware, among other possibilities.
“Everyone plays their role of bringing well-being and this idea of extending the wall very well,” he adds.
These economic alternatives, with similar proposals, also facilitate the application of slatted walls or panels in bathrooms (another current trend with the use of wood), since many of these materials are waterproof, leaving the customer free to choose to place them in the bathrooms. , toilet and next to the kitchen sink.
In addition to these alternatives, another point that raises doubts concerns the style and type of wood to be used and for what purpose. On this issue, Monike is also categorical.
“We have found both those who appreciate dark wood and others who reveal their preference for lighter tones. It all depends on the ambiance you want to achieve and the features intended for furnishing that room,” says the professional.
In one of their projects, for example, the two used demolition wood to give a rustic touch to the property’s outdoor environment. As for the interior space, the choice was made of Jequitibá wood.
Breadth
The feeling of extending and enlarging a wall is ensured by the use of wood clad wall, which gives spaciousness to the property.
mix of woods
It is possible to create combinations with different types of wood, exploring shades and textures, especially if placed in different environments of the same property.
Separation of environments
Using wooden slabs it is possible to separate the rooms in an elegant and functional way.
In the conception of the architectural project, the material is also perfect for making sliding doors, screens, partitions and even for creating the idea of separation from the very continuity of the covered wall.
