It could not be otherwise. With the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: a beauty line”, guests of the 2023 Met Gala paid tribute to the designer, who passed away in 2019. But also, of course, to the legacy he carried on at Chanel, the maison he managed from 1983 until his death. Even though the world’s most famous fashion ball hasn’t had that creative explosion seen in other years and despite many vintage pieces, there are some trends presented there that are on the rise and will remain for a while.
There were a few different and bold looks, but most of them can serve as inspiration for sophisticated parties. There were lots of gloves, pearls, Chanel’s trademark, lots of black, white and two-tone looks, and corset-back silhouettes in straight or wide skirts. Among the vintage looks, the one used by Gisele Bündchen, from 2007, stands out. Other productions have been by designers who were inspired by the so-called Kaiser of fashion, to be German, such as the one used by Anitta, created by Marc Jacobs. Rihannam, one of the last to enter, paid homage to the camellias, flowers that Chanel loved and that Karl Lagerfeld kept in his years at the helm of the maison
Check out 7 trends and get inspired.
Gloves

Anitta’s look, designed by Marc Jacobs, brings different trends seen on the Met Gala red carpet, such as black and white, the flower at the waist, a reference to Chanel’s camellia, and gloves, an accessory that has invaded the red carpet for some time.

The blonde Jessica Chastain opted for black, one of the trends of the evening, and also for the glove, this time transparent.
pearls

Several celebrities have bet on pearls, stones popularized by Coco Chanel and seen and reviewed several times by Lagerfeld. Kim Kardashian was one of them with this Schiaparelli dress, with 50,000 pearls and 16,000 crystals.

Pregnant model Karlie Kloss also wore pearls on a black 1980s Chanel-inspired gown.
two-tone

Actress Lily Collins, from ‘Emilia in Paris”, opted for black and white with this dress, which also features a corset-like design, one of the night’s trends. She even paid explicit homage to the designer on the hem of the dress. (look down).

The dress is Vera Wang and the jewels are Cartier.

Cara Delevingne, who has walked a lot for Chanel, dared with the enormous dress and boots that resemble trousers, in an unusual black and white combination, in homage to Karl and Chanel, who introduced the two-tone into fashion.
This black and white combo by Vanessa Hudgens is absolutely head-turning. Yet the flowers are reminiscent of camellias. It’s from Michael Kors.
Jennifer Lopez showed off the two-tone look by Ralph Lauren. Black and pink have been a constant in Karl Lagerfeld’s career for Chanel.
White

Gisele Bündchen was just one of the guests who wore white, with this vintage dress presented in 2007 for haute couture. And there were many, many others. The down coverage is simply stunning.
Yessss. Rihanna was one of the last to arrive at the Met Gala. Couldn’t miss it, right? And it was in white with a huge cloak of flowers, yet another reference to Chanel’s camellias. The long dress has a 5m long train and 30 camellias made up of 500 petals. Cartier jewels, according to the Page Six portal, were valued at 25 million dollars, approximately 124 million dollars. Fellow A$AP wore a white shirt, tie and black jacket, as well as jeans and a red-and-black checkered kilt.

White, flowers, tweed (a fabric often used by Chanel), Medusa brooches (by Versace) are mixed in this look by Anne Hathaway, in a mix of references from both brands. The pearly white color palette is a reference to brides by Chanel and Versace. The look has 15 yards of fabric and took 450 hours to make.
Black

Black lace, transparencies and a heavy air make up the look of Billie Eilish, which she completed with details reminiscent of a corset and even with gloves.

Jenna Ortega also focused on black, with volume, corset, chains and pearls, some of the main codes of Chanel by Lagerfeld. The model is by Tom Browne.

Rita Ora also opts for dramatic black, with transparencies, overlays and a huge queue to pay homage to Karl Lagerfeld.
corset

Today the corset is in vogue, but already in 1993 Karl Lagerfeld created this dress worn by Margot Robbie, with plastic and gold stripes, which recalls the modeling that emphasizes the waist.

Model Gigi Hadid also opted for a corset-like silhouette, with this embroidered tulle and sheer look from Givenchy.

Dua Lipa, who also wore a vintage Chanel dress, sports a full skirt and corset back. Bet, because the trend is here to stay.
Ties
Bows were another element used by Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel. Emily Blunt brings this and other trends together in one look. Signed by Michael Kors, whose atelier took 350 hours to embroider the sequins on the trousers. The production is an explicit tribute to the German designer.

Florence Pugh, with a shaved head, wore a white dress with a black bow that closed the neckline. Her look is by Valentino. She the actress wore jewelry from Tiffany.
