Four cases of infection have been registered this year, three in Roraima, in the northern region, and one in Paraná, in the south of the country.
The recent resurgence of cases of serotype 3 of the virus denguedisease transmitted by mosquito bites aedes aegypt, worries specialists about the risks of a new epidemic caused by this viral serotype after 15 years. A study of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz)coordinated by Fiocruz Amazônia and Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz), published on Wednesday 10, reveals that four cases of infection have been registered this year, three of them in roraimain the North region, and one in Paranain the south of the country.

“In this study, we performed the genetic characterization of cases of dengue virus serotype 3 infection. It is an indication that we may have again, perhaps not now, but in the coming months or years, epidemics caused by this serotype.” , says virologist Felipe Naveca, head of the Surveillance Center of Emerging, Re-emerging and Neglected Viruses at Fiocruz Amazônia and researcher at the Laboratory of Arboviruses and Hemorrhagic Viruses at IOC/Fiocruz.
The dengue virus has four serotypes, usually called DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4. When a person becomes infected with one of the four serotypes, they become immune to all types of viruses for a few months and then remain immune for the rest of their life to the type they were infected with.
However, if you get dengue fever again, one of the other three types of virus that you have not yet contracted, it may or may not have a more severe form. Most cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever occur in people previously infected with one of the four types of virus.
“The risk of an epidemic with the return of serotype 3 occurs due to low population immunity, since few people have contracted this virus since the last outbreaks in the early 2000s. There is also the danger of severe dengue, which occurs more frequently in people who have already had it disease and are infected again, with another serotype,” warns the institution.
