I share a way to deal with pain and longing on this date, but it also applies to all other days
Every year it’s like this: Mother’s Day is approaching and everything ends up revolving around it. But what to do on Mother’s Day without mom? How to deal with and welcome the emotions that arise when we no longer have our mother?
First of all, this is not just a text. It’s a tight hug!
Below, I share with you a path to deal with pain and nostalgia, especially on this date, but which also applies to all other days. If it’s difficult, be sure to seek professional help. And count on me if you need – I am here.
How to face Mother’s Day without mom
1. Make room to feel
The first step is open space to understand what emotions are present. Many feelings can often be combined: sadness, irritation, anger, confusion, longing, joy…
2. Name the emotions
Recognize and name emotions it helps to unroll the ball, especially when we lack lucidity. So when you think/feel something uncomfortable, try to notice and let that emotion have its own space.
3. Let sadness and longing come
Maybe you’ve already thought/heard this:
- “It’s been a while since my mom died, I should have gotten over it by now.”
- “It’s hard to think it’s Mother’s Day without her here.”
When questions like these arise, take care of that inner place and make room to feel the sadness and longing that occupy that place. That way, you won’t be left in the frustration and anger that can arise.
4. Be kind to yourself
Embracing emotions involves a lot of kindness and affection. Take small steps to acknowledge experiences, including painful ones. At the same time, appreciate what is unfolding in each moment.
5. Pay attention to your surroundings
It might be useful draw attention to one of the senses, to gain internal space and increase attention to the external environment. That awareness (understand everything here!) it allows us to remain aware of situations, without falling into reactivity or a known pattern.
You might notice, for example:
- The breath and the movement that occurs with it of expansion and contraction
- your feet on the ground
- The sounds of the environment around you
- A plant in the house or outside the window
When we carefully open the space to perceive ourselves, emotions can settle in another way.
Tip for this Mother’s Day
The moment is, yes, challenging. But you can choose to fill your time with activities that nourish you. A gift for you on this Motherless Mother’s Day.
I’ll start by making a few suggestions. But I would really like to make a long list, with your ideas.
- take a hot bath
- Massage your hands (if with therapeutic essential oilseven better)
- lie down in the hammock
- walk in the square
- Listening to music
- Dance
- Have a cup of tea (even more in the cold days, see tea recommendations here)
- Chat with a close friend
- …
I am here on Instagram, looking forward to your contribution. In addition to my hug, I wish you patience, love and support in your process.
