Cases in children increase during climate change, see what precautions to take
According to the latest Infogripe newsletter from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), hospitalizations of infants and children up to 4 years of age due to infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which causes bronchiolitis, have increased by 47 .2% in the last four weeks. This growth has been progressive compared to the months of February and March of this year.

Bronchiolitis is responsible for causing infections in the airways and lungs, which can progress to pneumonia. Symptoms include low-grade fever, sore throat, headache, and runny nose.
Increase in cases and importance of treatments
Dr. Ana Jannuzzi, a doctor specializing in paediatrics, who recently experienced the hospitalization of her two-month-old daughter due to this disease, warns families about the increase in cases and the importance of treatment, especially in this period of the year.
The disease is usually associated with colder times of the year, such as autumn and winter. What we have seen is that the infection has been affecting children since the end of last year. Bronchiolitis can lead to serious conditions and even cause death in patients younger than 2 years of age, especially premature infants and children living with chronic illnesses.
“My baby was admitted to the hospital and the warning signs were that her breathing rate was altered and she was difficult breathing. We immediately took her to the hospital to start treatment”, reveals Dr. Ana Jannuzzi.
symptoms of bronchiolitis
According to Dr. Ana Jannuzzi, families should be notified in case the child begins to have a high fever, persistent cough, difficulty breathing, wheezing, as well as purple lips and nails. Furthermore, given this situation, it is important that caregivers consult the doctor to verify the need for hospitalization.
Although it is very common, the severity of the disease is considered low. This is because, out of 100 cases of bronchiolitis, an estimated 10 children will need hospitalization. And of those 100 cases, only 1 will need ICU support.
Prevention measures of bronchiolitis
Dr. Ana Jannuzzi explains that, to prevent bronchiolitis, you need to take some treatment do not come in contact with the virus. That is, avoiding closed places, not being close to those with respiratory symptoms, washing your hands well, especially when you pick up the baby, are some important precautions.
“However, it is quite complicated to prevent the disease, especially if the child has older siblings, who attend daycare, for example, and in one way or another they will end up being in contact with different viruses. So, what I emphasize it is families be alert to the first signs of bronchiolitis, seek immediate treatment”, concludes the doctor.
