The timing couldn’t be more appropriate. In the week that Congress inflicted a defeat on the Lula government to withdraw powers from ministries such as the Environment and Indigenous Peoples, Amazonian designer Marcelo Duarte, belonging to the Kaixana people, located in Alto Solimões, made his debut in SPFW, with a parade reflecting its origins and with a manifesto against PL 490, a temporal bill for the delimitation of indigenous lands.

Thelminha Assis, engaged in social work, and the Tupi-Guarani model Dandara Queiroz walked the catwalk wearing garments from the “Tramas” collection, inspired by the woven wicker typical of indigenous peoples. At the end of the presentation, Marcelo walks hand in hand with the two. The models who have paraded, also of indigenous origin, carry placards against the billboard.
Pieces with an organic shape, mostly in pure cotton, in colors ranging from white to earth, with ornaments and accessories made with the techniques of 16 indigenous peoples of the Amazon. “To talk about ‘Trama’ is to talk about what we build, like a network woven by the collective that we are. Even if we are from different peoples, who bring the same customs and share similar historical characteristics. We are fighting for recognition and visibility, seeking that people know about our traditions and cultures, as well as the media,” said Maurício Duarte.
Both Thelminha and Dandara’s looks, who held the record for SPFW shows last year, portray the ancestral trade of basket weavers. Dandara shows even more the cylindrical and circular formats, originally present in tipitis (baskets), lamps and baskets, which refer to fond memories of the designer’s childhood.
Among the fibers used, which give a more structured shape to some garments, such as the bands that accompany the chemise and a corset skirt, there are arumã fibers. Tucum, the most malleable fiber, takes on the appearance of lace and is also found in yarns waxed with white pitch.
A journey into deep and ancestral Brazil, so necessary in this moment in which the original peoples need to be recognized and respected.
