Catia Fonseca, on ageism: “We want women to talk about it”

The presenter Catia Fonseca spoke about the importance of visibility and the fight against ageism today

Recently, Catia Fonseca was a guest on the podcast of FACES and spoke on various topics: ageism he was one of them. Prejudice against older people is currently much discussed and, for the presenter, this is due to the willingness to talk about various topics that were not covered before.

“It used to be normal. Ageism is a prejudice against older people. It’s always been there, but we didn’t have a name. We were used to it, having machismo, being harassed on the bus, it was part of it. Today we can talk openly and we want women to talk about it. It existed in a veiled way”he said.

The presenter clarified that she was aware of her privileges, but stressed that machismo, in a structural way, is present in the life of all women. The presenter stressed the importance of talking about the topic so that there is a fight.

“I put myself in a privileged position, not just because of my profession. If we talk about the issues that we see much greater with people of color, LGBT+… So I end up very favored, a white woman, there is a privilege. If we passed, imagine how much these people have gone through and continue to go through. That’s why it’s important to press that button, commenting with each other”.

Speaking of ageism, Catia Fonseca added: “This exists in our profession, but it exists more in other professions. The less favored the person is, the fewer opportunities and the more prejudices. That’s why I said that I don’t feel insecure, because I am aware that I have a privileged position and I didn’t want that was a privilege, I wanted it to be for everyone”.
