Nosophobia is an anxiety disorder in which there is a strong fear of contracting a specific disease in the future. In general, people who are more anxious or have some other anxiety disorder are more susceptible to developing this medical condition, as are people who have contact with subjects related to the disease, as is the case with healthcare professionals.
In a magazine interview Whoactress Claudia Ohana, 60, who is on the soap opera Vai na Fé, from Rede Globerevealed that he suffers from the disorder. She also said that she has been terrified of getting sick since she was a child. In one of her moments of crisis her nose bled and her fear made her think she had a brain tumor. She also said she avoids looking up information about diseases, so she doesn’t googling or reading drug information leaflets.
What is nosophobia?
It is a type of specific phobia. An anxiety disorder in which there is a very strong fear of contracting a specific disease.
“If the person still doesn’t have the diagnosis, they are afraid of having it. Generally, the person reads any sign in the body or symptom as evidence that they will have that specific disease: heart attack, cancer, tuberculosis or pneumonia, whatever the disease for. The diseases vary depending on individual beliefs,” says Nina Ferreira, a psychiatrist, specialist in schema therapy, neuroscience and neuropsychology.
According to the expert, it may be that the same individual changes the focus of fear: fear of having a heart attack, then mutates into cancer. “A phobia is excessive fear that makes a person suffer. To be considered nosophobia, the symptoms related to the fear of having a disease must be very intense and persistent.”
