Pain during sex has a name: dyspareunia, and the cause of the discomfort can depend on several factors.
Although reports of pain during sex are common, especially among women, discomfort isn’t normal. Ignorance and the normalization of pain keep many people from seeking help, mainly because many taboos still surround sex-related topics. With that, the condition can remain for a long time without a definitive diagnosis.

What can cause pain during sex?
A dyspareunia – technical name of pain during sexual intercourse – it can occur for several reasons. To identify the causes, it is necessary to pay attention to the intensity of the pain and also to the moment in which it occurs. That is, whether it is at the beginning of the penetration, when it reaches a greater depth, or after. This information will help your doctor make a diagnosis.
Gynecologist and president of the Brazilian Society of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery (SOBRACIL) in Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Thiers Soares, explains that the symptoms of dyspareunia are usually very noticeable.
However, in addition to occurring during penetration, pain can be felt during orgasm, through other types of penetration, and after intercourse. “These signs are related to the probable causes of the pain. Therefore, it is necessary to seek a specialized professional to analyze the case and identify the best treatment,” she says.
“I say this because it is possible that dyspareunia is related to lack of lubrication, illness or infection. On the other hand, it is important to remember that the problem can also be related emotionally, to the partner, in addition to the possibility of being related to stress and ‘anxiety,” adds the expert.
The cause can be emotional
It is worth remembering that every sexual relationship involves some kind of emotion – and this also affects the pain that the woman experiences. “In addition to mental disorders (such as depression and stress), body concern, fear, insecurity or partner problems can reduce arousal and cause discomfort,” justifies the gynecologist.
In this sense, according to Dr. Thiers Soares, women who have suffered some kind of sexual abuse develop traumas which are also responsible for generating a blockage and causing dyspareunia.
“Therefore, it is imperative that the woman consult her doctor. After having carried out the tests, and through the analysis of the specialized doctor, it will be possible to indicate what is best for the patient’s case”, the doctor reiterates.
It is worth mentioning that treatments for dyspareunia will depend on the cause that is leading to the pain. However, there are some recommendations that can help reduce the discomfort. This is the case, for example, of the use of lubricants during the sexual act and of the use of medicines in cases of illness. Or even surgery in more serious situations, such as in the case of endometriosis.
