Stenio Garcia, who is 91, is even more likely to suffer from the problem. According to the government agency, some of the groups most at risk of contracting the infection are premature babies; seniors over 65; people with AIDS, who have undergone chemotherapy or have used drugs that affect the body’s defences.

What is the treatment for sepsis?

A serious disease, sepsis kills 11 million people a year, according to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Brazil alone, according to Fiocruz, there are about 240,000 victims a year.

Such severity explains why the first few hours of treatment are so important. The Ministry of Health stresses that patients should be treated quickly with antibiotics, while blood cultures should be collected to identify the causative agent of the disease.
