Product capable of identifying the presence of bacteria is the second to be registered in the country
The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvis) approved on Tuesday 4 a new product to be used in the diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The “IBMP Biomol Rickettsiosis” kit.
The model can detect the presence of such bacteria Rickettsia spp. AND Rickettsia rickettsiithat cause the disease, based on the identification of the genetic material of these microorganisms in the patient’s blood.
The second test for diagnosing spotted fever registered in the country, the test uses PCR technology, which is able to identify the presence of the bacterium. Anvisa advises that the examination should be done by professionals specialized in molecular biology. The first test authorized in Brazil was registered with the agency in 2020.
Last month, Campinas, in the hinterland of São Paulo, experienced an outbreak of the disease. At least four people have died of Rocky Mountain spotted fever after going to a farm that organizes events in town.
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is transmitted through the bite of the star tick and has a high fatality rate. Symptoms include fever, red spots, body aches, headache, lack of appetite, and discouragement.
Because the symptoms are similar to other diseases, diagnosis is difficult. Although there is a treatment for the disease with antibiotics, the delay in identifying Rocky Mountain spotted fever contributes to the condition worsening, making the medicine no longer effective.
