According to the Brazilian Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPS), plastic surgery is one of the most sought-after practices, and research has mainly grown after the use of weight-loss drugs, as is the case with Ozempic. “This procedure is popular in Brazil and removes excess skin and fat, as well as tightens the abdominal muscles. As a result, the belly is flat and toned,” explains plastic surgeon Dr. Rodrigo Soffa, a member of BAPS.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

According to information from BAPS, abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts two to four hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. The surgeon makes an incision that allows excess skin and fat to be removed while tightening the abdominal muscles. “The skin around your belly button will also be reshaped during a full tummy tuck,” says the plastic surgeon.

Before the surgery begins, the patient will be given general anesthesia to ensure that they sleep and do not feel pain during the procedure. “Once under anesthesia, the surgeon will make the necessary incisions. Next, the doctor will repair the abdominal muscles, if necessary, tightening them to improve the contour of the area. Then any excess skin or fat from the abdominal area will be removed. by excision (for skin), liposuction (for fat), or other techniques”.

In the case of a full abdominoplasty, the doctor explains that the surgeon can also reposition the belly button for a more natural look after the surgery. Once the necessary changes have been made, the specialist will close the incisions with stitches or other techniques. After surgery, the patient will be taken to a recovery area, but can usually go home the next day.

Who is the procedure for??

According to the expert, tummy tuck can be a life changing procedure for many, but it is not suitable for everyone. “The ideal candidates are people who have had weight loss or pregnant and have excess skin, stretched or pulled muscles, and stubborn fat in the abdominal area that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise. For best results, the patient should be at or near ideal weight,” says Dr. Rodrigo Soffa.

The doctor also points out that the procedure is not suitable for those who simply want to lose weight. “While a tummy tuck can remove excess skin and fat and strengthen the abdominal muscles, it is not a weight loss procedure or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. The full results of a tummy tuck can take several months to fully appear as the swelling subsides and the incisions heal. To maintain results, it’s essential to avoid significant fluctuations in weight,” says the doctor.

After the procedure, physical activity should only be resumed on medical recommendation.

Recommendations after surgery

According to the doctor, recovery from an operation like this can take several weeks and the pain and discomfort felt during the first week can be controlled with medication, duly indicated by a professional. “To reduce swelling and promote healing, you’ll wear a contouring surgical gown continuously for the first two weeks and, as much as possible, for an additional month. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation, but you should focus on resting heavily,” says the plastic surgeon.

After the first week, the discomfort becomes less annoying. “The following week, the patient already begins to feel better and move more comfortably. Some patients will be able to go back to work and daily activities light. In other cases, only in the fourth week”.

The most strenuous exercises can be resumed, with the doctor’s approval, only after the sixth week, but a warning is in order: “Since the recovery program of each patient is different, follow the surgeon’s instructions for each specific case. This will also help minimize the appearance of surgical scars,” says the practitioner.

consult an expert

BAPS recommends seeking a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in tummy tuck surgery and recommends:

  • Check the doctor’s credentials;
  • Ask for references;
  • Read the comments of other patients;
  • Review photos of the professional’s work.

“Make an appointment with surgeon chosen to discuss your goals and concerns. Good communication between patient and surgeon is the key to achieving the desired results,” concludes Dr. Rodrigo Soffa.
