Vegan diet: discover the benefits and how to do it right

The food model is recognized for its high fiber and antioxidant content.

A vegan is that person who simply excludes any food of animal origin from their daily life. Rigidity is undoubtedly the cause of maintaining this habit. However, since this is a food model that has recently strengthened in Brazil, it raises questions especially for those who want to incorporate it, for example: is a vegan diet able to protect the kidneys?

The vegan diet is vital for the kidneys

“This type of diet can also benefit the kidneys. A diet based on vegetables, greens and grains is associated with a decrease in risk factors related to kidney disease. This happens because there is a greater intake of fiber and antioxidants in the diet “These nutrients help the body against inflammatory components and oxidative stress. Furthermore, the vegan diet reduces the risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, three problems closely related to kidney disease,” said the nephrologist dr. Caroline Reigada.

The doctor also cited studies showing reductions in systolic (up to about 5 mmHg) and diastolic (up to about 3 mmHg) blood pressure with the adoption of a plant-based diet.

“This relationship can be explained by the weight reduction promoted by the vegetarian diet, since blood pressure is known to be associated with weight. We must always remember that hypertension is the number one cause of kidney failure,” added the doctor.

Other benefits of the vegan diet

Carolina indicated the vegan diet as interesting for people suffering from chronic kidney disease, i.e. these patients present a change in the microbiota, which implies different changes in bacterial fermentation and in the generation of toxic proteins.

“These toxic proteins accumulate in patients’ plasma, contribute to uraemic syndrome as an effect on renal disease progression, pro-inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress, cardiovascular risk and insulin resistance. It has been shown that the production of these solutes is affected by changes in dietary habits, as vegan diets rich in non-digestible fiber can reduce urinary excretion of these toxic proteins by approximately 60%.”

Finally, Reigada said these benefits can also be experienced by “non-vegan” patients. Those who choose to reduce the consumption of meat and, above all, to increase the intake of natural foods, for example: fruit, vegetables and legumes.

“We must always emphasize that this type of benefit does not apply to those patients who maintain high consumption of ultra-processed foods. And, especially, those high in sodium and chemical food additives, which are linked to inflammation. Plan a vegan diet it requires a lot of care and consultation with a professional is essential,” concluded Dr. Caroline Reigada.
