Three months. That’s how much time Australian Timothy Shaddock and his dog, Bella, spent adrift in the Pacific. Now, Shaddock has decided to leave his faithful companion.

In April, the described “experienced sailor” and his pet left the city of La Paz, Mexico, bound for French Polynesia, until a storm damaged their catamaran. With no resources to cook, the two survived for months on raw fish and rainwater, until they were found by the “Maria Delia” tonnara about 1,930 km from the mainland.

On Tuesday 18th Shaddock and Bella finally landed in the Mexican port of Manzanillo.

Upon arrival, the Australian praised his partner. “He’s an amazing animal. I’m grateful he’s alive. He’s so much braver than me.”

“Bella found me in the middle of Mexico. She’s Mexican. She’s the spirit of the middle of the country and she wouldn’t let me go. I tried to find her a house three times and she kept following me to the water,” he said .

However, Shaddock chose to leave the bitch. According to Antonio Guerra, director of the company that owns the trap that carried out the rescue, Timothy handed the dog over to the captain of the boat who saved his life. Bella didn’t leave the boat until the Australian left.

The sailor intends to return to Australia soon and said he can’t wait to see his family again.
