An American family, in the hinterland of São Paulo, has experienced moments of tension to be able to travel with their dog in the cabin of an international flight. The family, who were moving to Portugal, already had judicial authorization for the boarding house with emotional support dogl, but was stopped by the TAP airline, last Monday 17, at the international airport of Guarulhos, in Sao Paulo.
The lawyer Giovanna Pokerdefending the family in the process, the group said did not receive support from the airline and incurred the costs of room and board after being interdicted. To make matters worse, “the applicants’ residence in Brazil had already been sold, so they didn’t even have a place to stay, and they had a child, a dog and 13 huge suitcases, as they were moving to Portugal,” the lawyer told the Earth.
The father, mother, daughter and dog were able to make their way the next day, having “complied with the second injunction, with 20 minutes left to close the boarding gate”. Even so, even with the court decision in hand, poker he explains that they met resistance and even called the police. However, before the arrival of the officers on the scene, the group boarding was authorized and the family was able to continue their journey.
Taking pets into aircraft cabins is still controversial. In addition to offering emotional support to the father and daughter, who suffer from anxiety disorders, the French bulldog breed called Logano he is brachycephalic (a condition that causes respiratory and thermoregulation problems) and would risk dying if he were transported in the hold of the aircraft.
Poker explains that, to obtain the injunction, the father’s psychiatric report, a prescription for the drugs he uses continuously and the psychological report of his 9-year-old daughter were presented, to certify the emotional support of Logano to the family. Proof of the dog’s physical health was also required, with a certificate of vaccinations and tests. The dog presented “no risk of contagion to other humans or animals”. The family intends to file a lawsuit for moral and material damages against TAP.
OR Earth contacted TAP, but received no response. To the G1, the company explained that the authorization to board was the responsibility of the aircraft commander. “There are global guidelines that must be adhered to by airlines that aim for passenger safety that aim for the safety of passengers on board. Bringing dogs onto an airplane is no exception. In this specific case, since the dog did not meet the requirements, it is up to the skipper to decide whether or not the animal can travel in the cabin. This decision is always evaluated with passenger safety in mind.
